Brave New World imagines a globalized world controlled not through force, but through overwhelming pleasure – a dystopia drowning in endless gratification, but devoid of inner fulfillment. What amazes me is how hauntingly similar the society Huxley depicted (predicted?) in this 1932 novel is to our own. Today, we swipe through a city’s worth of singles with our fingertips, have our favorite food at our doorstep in minutes, shop from an infinite catalog of products delivered overnight, and are “connected” to everyone – yet feel increasingly empty inside. Who knew that a dystopia could have credit cards, online shopping, doorstep food delivery, dating apps, and personal chauffeur services? We might be living in a brave new world today…
